Harikuyo

Harikuyo is a memorial service held in shrines and temples in Japan for the broken sewing needles of the past year.

I think that might be one of the most intriguing traditions I’ve ever heard, and since the day I first read about it I’ve been fascinated. So that’s what this blog will be….a memorial of broken sewing needles, ideas that have not yet come to fruition, plans that have been torn down, questions in process and thoughts that need to be written down in order to start to figure them out.

Love, and Love Not

Love….the smell of fresh, warm laundry; really crisp apples; the beach smell; sweeping; the Outlander series; blooming cherry blossoms; the ice cream truck; weeding; cooking; parades; the smell of dark coffee; The Police’s ‘So Lonely’; Fryes; Creemees; cherry-red painted toenails; skirts and dresses that spin well; organizing; good face cream; fresh basil; the smell of oil of olay; purple lilacs; BBQs; ping pong; puppy breath; picnics; black cashmere turtlenecks; new running shoes; the smell of freshly cut grass and charcoal; my dog….

Not…taxes; changing the inner shower curtain; putting away clothes; mice; cleaning up after dinner; long toenails; the movie ‘Waterworld’ (the only movie, to date, I’ve ever walked out of); the word ‘coagulate’; milk gone bad; pimples; girls who try too hard on the dancefloor…

It’s interesting to read through this mindless ongoing thought and see how many are associated with smell. A smell can transport me somewhere immediately, and I think I hold onto good smells because they always make me smile, as they represent a happy moment in life.
